Magnum To race In San Pasqual Handicap at Santa Anita Park
Posted on Monday, January 5th, 2009
Magnum is scheduled to make his first start in more than five months when the gelding bred in Argentina runs in Saturday’s $150,000 San Pasqual Handicap (G2), a major prep for the $1 million Santa Anita Handicap on March 7 at Santa Anita Park.
“He had a quarter crack,” race hrose trainer Darrell Vienna said in explaining his absence. “This is a logical starting point back for him, because he’s a horse without any conditions, and he’s got some age on him. He’s been a useful horse and he’s paid his way.”
The 8-year-old son of El Compinche, Magnum has a 5-3-2 record from 24 starts, with earnings of $681,249 for owners William and Donna Herrick of Carlsbad.

Tizfiz provided jockey Agapito Delgadillo and race horse trainer Rafael DeLeon with their most prestigious career victories Sunday, January 4, in Santa Anita Park’s 40th running of the $150,000 San Gorgonio Handicap.
At the age of 42, jockey Agapito Delgadillo guided the 5-year-old Tiznow mare Tizfiz through moderate fractions during the 1 1/8-mile turf course while preserving just enough to repel the closing bid of 2-1 second choice Marzelline by a nose at odds of 9-1.
Marzelline, with jockey Victor Espinoza in the irons, closed steadily on the outside to narrowly miss while finishing 1/2 length ahead of third-place Solar Miss, ridden by jockey Garrett Gomez, in the field of 8. Valbenny, the 2-1 favorite with jockey Alex Solis aboard, checked in a well-beaten fourth.
